In Solidarity

Acrylic stencil on paper

2020

In the midst of the Black Lives Matter actions during spring of 2020, I made a digital drawing in tangent with an acrylic stencil print that was dispersed to friends. I wanted to express my solidarity for the movement through history's well-known example of Black and Asian solidarity, Yuri Kochiyama, who was a life-long civil rights activist and friend of Malcom X. Twelve stencils of overlapping colors and intersecting shapes reminding us that the disadvantages and discrimination we face as oppressed people do not exist independantly from each other. Yuri Kochiyama's lifelong dedication to resistance and solidarity motivates me to think structurally and show up!
